Itinerary
DAY 1: CUSCO – CALCA – LARES – WACAHUASI
You will be picked up from your hotel at 4:30 a.m. to begin our adventure by passing through the Sacred Valley of the Incas on our way to the village of Lares, where we will have time to relax in the medicinal Lares thermal baths. Along the way, we will have fine views of the majestic Sacred Valley, with its fertile lands. We will have lunch in the valley, after which we will pack all our gear onto the mules that our mule drivers will lead throughout our entire hike. After passing through beautiful communities, we will arrive at our camp, at Huacawasi (3770 meters above sea level).
DAY 2: WACAHUASI – IPSAYCOCHA – PATACANCHA
We will begin the day very early in the morning with a nutritious breakfast, before starting our walk. This will be a long day, as we ascend to the Ipsay high pass. Along the way, we will pass rural communities and be able to appreciate the beauty of the customs of each community, through the multicolored clothing and textiles they weave for their daily use. At midday, we will stop for lunch, and after time to rest we will continue as far as Patacancha, where we will spend our second night.
DAY 3: PATACANCHA – WILLOQ – OLLANTAYTAMBO
After breakfast, we will continue our hike to the picturesque village of Willoq, with its many original Andean customs. We will also pass small communities where experiential tourism is now being introduced. During our walk, we will also pass the archaeological sites of Qochapata and Pumamarca, where there will be time to appreciate the famous agricultural terraces built by the Incas. At around noon, we will arrive in the village of Ollantaytambo, situated on the banks of the Vilcanota River, in a fertile valley. This village is known as the most important surviving example of an Inca settlement in the Cusco region. After lunch, there will be time to explore the village before taking the train to Aguas Calientes. We will spend the night in a local hostel with private bathroom and hot water. During our last evening meal together, you will be given a briefing as preparation for the visit to Machu Picchu.
DAY 4: MACHU PICCHU – CUSCO
In the early morning, at around 4:30 a.m., we will begin the walk to the majestic Inca city of Machu Picchu, where we will meet with the guide and the rest of the group. Please note: There are two options for the ascent to Machu Picchu; on foot to see the sunrise, very early; or taking the bus. At the ruins, we will receive a guided tour of the site lasting approximately two hours, after which you will have free time to visit the rest of the citadel, including for example the Inca Bridge and the Sun Gate. After leaving the citadel at the time agreed with the guide, we will descend on foot or by bus to the small town of Aguas Calientes, where we will board the return train to the village of Ollantaytambo, where a bus will take us back to the city of Cusco.
